Frequently asked questions

What is American MahJong?

American MahJong is a tile game for four players using 152 tiles, jokers, and a card of winning hands. Players draw and discard tiles, may "call" others' discards to build exposed groups, and race to be first to complete a full 14-tile hand from the card. It is popular at social gatherings across the United States.

How do I learn to play MahJong as a beginner?

Start with She MahJong's free guided tutorial. A coach walks you through the tiles, the Charleston, jokers, calling, and winning hands, then you can practice against friendly bots at your own pace with no timers. When you're ready, open a private room to play with friends online.

What is the Charleston in MahJong?

The Charleston is the tile-passing ritual at the start of a hand. Players pass three tiles to the right, across, and to the left (with an optional second round), which lets everyone trade away tiles they can't use. Jokers can never be passed in the Charleston.

How do jokers work in American MahJong?

Jokers can stand in for any tile inside a group of three or more identical tiles (pung, kong, quint or sextet). They cannot be used in pairs, singles, or for flowers. A winning hand made with no jokers at all is worth double points.

Can I play MahJong online with friends for free?

Yes. She MahJong has free private multiplayer rooms: create a room, share the four-letter code, and up to four friends play together in real time. Empty seats are filled by bots so you can start right away, and it works in any web browser with no download.

How do you spell it — mahjong, mah jongg, or MahJong?

All refer to the same game. "Mah jongg" is the traditional American spelling, "mahjong" is the common modern spelling, and "MahJong" is how our site brands it. American MahJong specifically refers to the four-player variant using jokers and an annual card of hands.
